Police find ‘skimming’ devices at Gulf gas station

A repair worker last week discovered three “skimming” devices — electronic equipment made to steal credit or ATM card information — attached to gas pumps at the Gulf station at Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

“At this time no personal accounts have been compromised,” police said in a news release.

A faulty credit card reader on a gas pump led the Gulf station owner to call a repair worker, who found a skimming device on the pump, according to police. Checks of the station’s other pumps uncovered two more skimming devices, police said.

NCPD spokeswoman officer Eloise Abdullah confirmed that no financial theft occurred via the skimming devices. Citing the department’s open investigation, Abdullah declined to say whether there was security camera footage of whoever attached the skimming devices.

Police requested that anyone with information about the crime call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. They said callers would remain anonymous.
