Three St. Agnes Catholic Youth Organization basketball teams won championships at the sixth annual Joseph P. Altman Basketball Tournament last month, while two others made it to their respective title games.

The tournament, which St. Agnes hosted from Dec. 26 to Dec. 30, consisted of 31 sixth-grade boys and girls teams from around the area. St. Agnes had seven of them.

"All week, the gym was packed with kids from town watching and playing hoops, taking part in raffles and enjoying concessions, lending helping hands and enjoying a lasting memory they will hopefully cherish forever,” said Mike Shevlin, the tournament director and coach of the Boys A team. “It makes me proud to be a St Agnes parishioner and part of this great CYO Program.”

The Boys A team, led by tournament MVP Robert Pericolosi and All-Tournament team members Danny McMahon, Brian Mullen and Jack Shevlin, went on to win their tournament, as did the B1 and C groups. Those squads were coached by Chris Bechtle and Mike Perna, respectively.

Chris Vanco was named MVP of the B1 division, and P.J. Kellachan, Chris Bechtle, Jr. and Logan Kelly received All-Tournament honors.

Chris Kenny took MVP honors in Boys C and Matt Spinelli, Connor O’Mara and Gavin Belling were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The B2 team, coached by Rick Schaeffer, lost in the title game, but Matt Ingram, Danny Walter and Jack Schaeffer were named to the All-Tournament team.

Mullen also won the sixth-grade skills competition that took place during the tournament.

The Girls B team, coached by Eugene Marquardt, also made the program proud by advancing to the championship game.

The tournament raised over $20,000 through the generosity of parents, guests and local businesses. All of the proceeds were put back into the CYO program.
