A little rain couldn’t stop the music

The North Merrick Public Library hosted a music festival on June 3 that starred many up-and-coming musicians: elementary school to high school students from the community.

Ensembles from North Merrick’s elementary schools, Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun and Mepham high schools gathered in the evening of June 3 at the library for the seventh annual “Merricks Make Music” concert. The show was originally scheduled to take place outside, but the threat of rain forced it to move inside, and the bands played on.

The North Merrick jazz band played classic rock tunes and the James Bond theme music; Word of Mouth, the MAMS a cappella group, sang Broadway and pop tunes; the Calhoun-Mepham chamber orchestra played a selection of classical, folk and pop music; and the Calhoun jazz band played Chick Corea and Michael Buble numbers.
