Crossing guard in serious but stable condition after struck on Merrick Ave.

A female crossing guard was struck by a vehicle while she was on duty at the corner of Merrick Avenue and Old Mill Road at 8:17 a.m. on May 2, according to Nassau County police.Officials at Nassau University Medical Center say she is in serious but stable condition after undergoing surgery on Wednesday to repair a broken leg.

Officials have not identified the crossing guard, but police say she sustained leg injuries and was rushed to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

The intersection is a block south of Sacred Heart School and a quarter-mile west of Old Mill Road Elementary School, and is near the eastbound and westbound entrances to the Southern State Parkway.

No one else was injured in the incident, police said. Officials from Sacred Heart and Old Mill Road could not say whether any children were near or at the corner at the time.
