Just a seashell’s toss from the cabanas at Malibu Shore Club sits MaliBlue Oyster Bar, which is open to the public. A far cry from a beach club concession, MaliBlue Oyster Bar is actually a striking, contemporary restaurant with patio dining against an ocean backdrop. Weather permitting, popular bands play on a regular basis.

MaliBlue’s Executive Chef Chris Seidl is part of The Dover Group, which is owned by Butch Yamali, who also holds Dover Catering, The Coral House, The Sands on Lido Beach and Carnival Ice Cream. With access to all these fine resources, Chef Chris creates unique fare that won’t disappoint. He has just added sushi to MaliBlue’s  menu, thanks to Himawari Japanese Restaurant of Long Beach.

Until recently, Malibu Shore Club was merely a fond beach club memory for many — where icons like The Who and Cindy Lauper used to perform. In 2009, Yamali refurbished the club and surrounding park, adding a convenience store, pizza parlor, ice cream shop and children’s day camp. Now, at MaliBlue Oyster Bar, bands like Mystic are on the agenda.

We dined inside, where the summery décor is white and powder blue. Servers were friendly and eager to please. In lieu of bread were savory homemade pita chips and hummus. Crab cakes on a bed of black bean-corn salad were topped with mango-pineapple salsa and garnished with fried plantain. Lobster quesadillas were superb. Fish tacos, made with flounder, shredded lettuce, cheese guacamole and sour cream get a thumbs-up too. Served sizzling in a pan, “Lobster Fleetwood Mac & Cheese” is the ultimate comfort food, rivaled only by its namesake.
