Three challengers and one incumbent are vying for two seats on the North Merrick Library Board of Trustees. The election will take place on Monday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the library.

The candidate with the most number of votes in the election will earn a five-year term. The candidate with the second most number of votes will receive a one-year term to complete the five-year term vacated recently by Trustee Elise Johnsen.

The following provides candidates’ biographies:

Carol Anthony

Carol Anthony, 56, is seeking her first term as a library trustee. She has lived with her husband, Joe Sowinski, in Merrick since 2009. In the past 20 years, she has lived in New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Her careers have included teaching English as a Second Language at DPT Business School in Philadelphia, managing a performance space/gallery in Manhattan and working as a desktop publisher in public relations. Currently, as a small-business entrepreneur, Anthony is developing an e-learning solutions program for teaching foreign languages to children and adults.

Anthony moved to Merrick from Tuckahoe in Westchester County, where she served on the board of a large residential cooperative, serving as the primary liaison between the shareholders and management. She currently volunteers for Life’s Worc in Garden City and is a member of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. She has also volunteered in various public library and church-based after-school programs, and has chaired music and art committees in Westchester, upstate New York and Philadelphia.

“I am motivated to run for a trustee position because I care deeply about the future of the library as a vital gathering place for ideas, collaboration and problem solving,” said Anthony. “As a relative newcomer, I think I offer a fresh perspective.”

Alice Cammiso

Alice Cammiso, 74, is seeking her first term as a North Merrick Public Library trustee. She has four grown children, and has been a North Merrick resident for more than 40 years. Cammiso earned her associate’s degree at Nassau Community College, has studied communications at the Dale Carnegie Institute and has taken management courses at the American Management Association.
