Heavy winter storm blasts Bellmore-Merrick

Posted

Updated: Wednesday, 4:21 p.m. A winter storm roared into Long Island early Wednesday morning, and by midday had dumped an estimated two to four inches of snow and ice on Bellmore-Merrick.

More of the white stuff was expected as the day progressed, with the heaviest accumulations expected between3 and 7 p.m. Prognosticators were predicting from eight to 18 inches of snow, with the storm finally tapering off Thursday around 1 a.m.

Road conditions were mixed on Wednesday, with thoroughfares such as Sunrise Highway generally cleared, but many side streets were still not plowed. Long Island Rail Road workers were hard-pressed to keep platforms clear.

But local children were happy. No school!
