Levy-Lakeside sixth-graders to hold fundraiser for South Sudan

Posted

Susan Molloy’s sixth-grade class at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School will hold a fundraiser at Long Island Laser Bounce in Levittown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, to raise funds to drill a clean water well in South Sudan.

Earlier this year, the children read “A Long Walk to Water,” a novel published in 2010 by Linda Sue Park, which details the lives of two South Sudanese children whose lives have been drastically altered because of a lack of clean water.

Affected by the story, 41 children in two of Molloy’s classes started a campaign called “Kids Who Care.” The students made T-shirts and bracelets and organized fundraisers outside of school to raise money and awareness for Water for South Sudan, a nonprofit organization committed to drilling water wells in the country. To date, the organization has drilled 104 wells.

One well costs roughly $4,000, and so far, the students have raised $2,700.

There is a $15 entry fee to participate in the Laser Bounce event, with $10 going to Water for South Sudan. Included in the price is laser tag, 20 game tokens, and other games and activities. If you have any questions, call Long Island Laser Bounce at (516) 342-1330.
