Local gyms work to find a cure

Six local Synergy Fitness clubs recently collaborated to raise nearly $12,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a U.S. breast cancer foundation. On Jan. 12, Synergy presented a donation check to Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D., CEO of Susan G. Komen.

“Synergy’s generous donation … will make a significant difference in the lives of many women and families in the greater New York City area who are facing the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer,” Richardson-Heron said. “It is because of supporters like Synergy that we are able to have the tremendous success our organization has had to date.”

Throughout October, the Synergy clubs of Baldwin, Franklin Square, Long Beach, Merrick, Garden City Park and Syosset printed and sold pink T-shirts with Synergy logos, and held raffles for six 42-inch, flat-screen TVs. Additionally, each gym hosted a member appreciation party during the month, and local vendors attended and donated their services to help the cause.

According to Tania Rios, general manager of the Baldwin Synergy, the gym is planning a larger fundraising event for October 2012.
