Mepham High School stages 'A Night on Broadway' for cancer research

While Mepham High School students said they were pleased to bring Broadway to Bellmore last week, they were even more pleased to raise more than a thousand dollars for a worthy cause.

The Skull and Bones Drama Club presented its fourth annual revue at Mepham on Jan. 30. Edward Grosskreuz, the drama club’s adviser, said the group raised $1,651 for the Lymphoma Research Foundation at “A Night on Broadway.”

The Lymphoma Research Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization devoted to funding lymphoma research and providing people with lymphoma and health care professionals with the latest information about this deadly form of cancer. LRF’s mission is to eradicate lymphoma and serve those touched by the disease.

In the past, Mepham’s revue raised money for the school’s drama program, but Grosskreuz said that students decided to make “A Night on Broadway” a benefit show this year, raising funds through the sale of tickets, snacks and lime-green ribbons signifying lymphoma awareness.

The student performers, all of whom dressed in black, also wore green ribbons or clothes while treating the audience to scenes and songs from popular musicals. The students selected their numbers from a range of Broadway productions, including “Wicked,” “Aladdin, “Rent” and “Peter Pan.”

“The reason we do the revue is to give everyone their moment in the spotlight and really show off their love of theater and enjoyment of performing,” Grosskreuz said.
