Merrick trustee throws support behind incumbent Susan Schwartz

Posted

To the Editor:

It has been my pleasure to serve as a Merrick Board of Education trustee for the past 12 years with Susan Schwartz, who is running for re-election this year. Susan has been a member of the Merrick board for 12 years and has represented the district on the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Board for the past five years.

Susan’s commitment to the children and families of Merrick began when her children entered elementary school. She served on numerous committees, on the site-based team and as a PTA co-president. She learned how important it is for parents and staff to work together to create safe environments that nurture learning.

As a school trustee, Susan was instrumental in establishing Merrick’s foreign language program, and instituting new health, physical education and APEX curricula in the Merrick schools.

As a member of the Central High School District board, Susan supported the establishment of the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, Project Lead the Way and the Senior Experience. She actively attends events in all our district schools.

Merrick and Bellmore-Merrick students’ scores on Advanced Placement, Regents and state-mandated tests are outstanding. Our students’ musical, artistic and athletic efforts win county, state and national recognition. Our classrooms in both districts have Smart Boards and laptops, and iPads are currently being implemented. Susan has consistently supported and encouraged our students and districts to raise the bar academically and artistically.

As a homeowner and taxpayer in Merrick, Susan feels the financial strains that we are all experiencing. She is committed to drafting school budgets that reflect both the needs of students and of our community.

Susan is an elementary school teacher who understands what is required to help students not only learn but also excel. As a school board member, She will work to enrich and inspire students by providing opportunities designed to educate the whole student.

Vote for Susan on May 15 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
