N. Merrick F.D. saves dog from blaze

Posted

Volunteers from the North Merrick Fire Department rescued a dog from a house fire on Arms Avenue in North Merrick at about 2 a.m. on June 20.

According to North Merrick Fire Chief James Allen, two bedrooms on the house’s second floor were on fire when volunteers arrived at the home. The occupants of the house, two adults and one child, got out safely after being awoken by a fire alarm.

Upon searching the house, firefighter Robert Goohs of Engine 2 found a dog lying unconscious underneath a bed. Firefighters brought the dog outside, and oxygen was administered to the dog by EMT Karenann Wortman.

The dog, named Henry, was taken to a nearby veterinarian and released an hour later. It is now currently recovering, said Allen.

The Merrick, Roosevelt and East Meadow fire departments assisted North Merrick at the fire site, and Freeport and North Bellmore volunteers stood by in case any additional calls were received.

The fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office, but Allen said it looked like it was electrical in nature.
