N. Merrick firefighters hone lifesaving skills

Posted

The North Merrick Fire Department recently took part in “Gone in 6 Hours,” an exercise in which volunteer firefighters practiced extricating people trapped in cars.

The exercise took place at the Four Towns Fire Training Center in Merrick, where volunteer firefighters ripped apart rows of parked cars so they could hone their life-saving skills. The firefighters used different rescue tools for different emergency situations, such as removing victims from overturned vehicles, and in one instance, rescuing a victim from a car crushed by a tractor-trailer bed.

Gershow Recycling, a metal recycling facility, which has seven locations across Long Island, donated the cars.
