Nassau Chamber says buy locally

The Nassau Council Chamber of Commerce, an organization representing more than 40 chambers in Nassau County, announced Tuesday the start of its most comprehensive media and advertising campaign encouraging Nassau residents to shop locally this holiday season.

The program, dubbed "It Starts Here... Buy Locally," includes more than 130 radio spots, more than 50 TV spots, and print advertisements.

"We are here today to promote shopping locally," said Julie Marchesella, first vice president of the Council of Chambers, who owns Queen of Hearts in Merrick, at a Tuesday news conference. "Our hope is that residents of Nassau will shop in downtown areas and keep tax dollars in Nassau County."

Joni Caputo, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, said, "Most local merchants live in their community where the do their business so they're a very big supporter of the local organizations."

Representatives also noted that downtown shopping areas are often closer to homes and therefore more convenient than malls for shoppers. And local stores are able to provide better discounts, Caputo said.

"We're asking consumers to remember that by shopping for goods and services in their nearby downtowns, they are helping boost the economy," said E. Christopher Murray, president of the Council of Chambers. "The profits these businesses make pay local salaries, pay property taxes to support local schools, and the sales tax revenue generated supports the county in providing these necessary services."
