New Year brings new events to Bellmore-Merrick libraries

The four libraries of Bellmore and Merrick have many fun and interactive events lined up for January, ranging from concerts to cooking classes.

To kick off the new year and celebrate the old, the North Merrick Public Library will have an Amazing Animations program on Jan. 5. Children in grades 2 to 6 will learn about hand drawn animation and create visual optical illusions including a thaumatrope and flipbook. The program will be held from 4 to 5 p.m., and parents are asked to remain on the premises. Registration will be open as of Tuesday, Dec. 26 at 11 a.m.

The music group 4 Ways from Sunday will visit the library on Jan. 14, and will present a lively program full of classic hits from the 50s through the 80s. Attendees will be able to clap, sing and dance along as they recreate many memorable tunes. The concert will take place from 2 to 3:15 p.m., and no pre-registration is required.

The Merrick Library also has their own events lined up for the month. Chef Robert Dell’Amore is coming to the library to provide a demonstration and tasting of her Hearty Vegetarian Chili.

The event will take place on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m., with pre-registration for card holders beginning on Dec. 28, and registration for all other card holders beginning on Jan. 4.

The library will also hold an Open Mic Poetry Night alongside Nassau County poet Laureate Paula Curci on Jan. 8. Anyone in 7th grade and older is invited to share their work, whether original or established poetry, in a warm atmosphere. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m in the Community Room, and no registration is required.

The North Bellmore Public Library will have their own food event, with librarian Miss Julie teaching a lesson about how to Chinese Lo Mein. This event will be held on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m., and it is open to grade 6 and up. Registration will begin on Jan.2.

They will also hold an event for those who need community service, with kids grades 6 and up invited to make winter crafts with a new young friend on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The event will occur at 3:45 p.m., with one hour of community service being awarded. Registration will be open as of Jan. 2.

Towards the end of the month, Stan Wiest will be coming to the library, performing music, and telling stories of his experiences performing with and for celebrities in a Sunday Concert. The show will also wrap up with a full audience sing-along of American classics.

The concert will be held on Sunday, Jan. 21, with no registration required.

Melissa Marshall will be coming to the Bellmore Memorial Library on Jan. 13, reading her book, “It All Started With A Box of Crayons.” There will also be a craft part of the event.

Children ages 3 to 8 are invited, and registration for this event is open as of Tuesday, Jan.2.

The library also invites teens grades 6-12 to attend their winter snow globe Teen Crafting Hour on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

The globes will be waterless, and contain trees, snowmen, and sparkling snow. The event will be held on Jan. 24 at 4 p.m., with registration beginning on Jan. 2.
