Police: Man arrested after string of burglaries in Merrick

A Hicksville man was arrested and charged with burglarizing two Merrick businesses and attempting to burglarize a third on Monday, Nov. 29 and Tuesday, Nov. 30, according to police.

Detectives alleged that Michael Kenney, 41, broke into Cards Unlimited on Merrick Ave. at 2:32 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, by cracking the front glass door with a rock and stole property valued at more than $2,300.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, police said, Kenney attempted to break the front glass door of the Corona Deli in Freeport, again using a rock, but was unsuccessful and fled the scene.

Additionally, police alleged that Kenney broke into the Smith Street Deli in Merrick by cracking the front glass door with a rock at 3:58 a.m. on Nov. 30. According to detectives, he then stole property valued at more than $1,365.

Police said that a witness called 911 and told responding officers that he saw Kenney flee on a bicycle, pulling a garbage can beside him. After a foot pursuit and a search, police arrested Kenney. Proceeds from the Smith Street Deli were recovered from the garbage can.

Police charged Kenney with two counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree attempted burglary and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief. He was to be arraigned Dec. 1 in First District Court in Hempstead.
