Nassau County Police recently arrested Walter Lester, 58, of Merrick, and charged him with grand larceny. Police allege that Lester, a co-owner of H&W Home Cleaning on Merrick Avenue in Merrick, stole $10,000 to $15,000 worth of jewelry from one of his clients.

First Squad detectives investigated Lester after a call from the client. According to authorities, the victim, an 84-year-old Merrick resident, contacted H&W Home Cleaning to clean her home. Lester arrived with a partner at the victim’s house on Sept. 1. Upon completion of the job, the victim noticed that jewelry was missing from her home.

Police said Lester returned on Sept. 8 to the victim’s home to clean the house, and once again she noticed that jewelry was missing.

After an investigation, police arrested Lester on Sept. 28. He was provided with a legal aid attorney, who cannot, as a rule, comment on the case.

Police urge any residents who have used the services of H&W Home Cleaning, and may have noticed any missing items, to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
