School's out, sledding's in around Bellmore-Merrick

Posted

When Bellmore and Merrick residents awoke on Wednesday morning, they found –– much to their relief –– that, no, they had not been pounded by another blizzard. Instead, an overnight storm blanketed the community with three to five inches of fresh powder.

By midday, most local roads were cleared, salted and sanded. And, as of press time, local fire departments were reporting only routine calls.

Much to the delight of local children and teens, school in all five Bellmore-Merrick area districts was cancelled. And kids throughout the community could be found building snow forts and sledding down hills at Newbridge Road Park and Mepham High School.

Dane Hansen, 17, of North Merrick, said, “We just ride quads and snowboard, and have snowball fights."

And the Herald was there to catch the action.
