SMCCA plans upcoming Spring Clean Sweep

The South Merrick Community Civic Association is planning their 16th annual Spring Clean Sweep. The event will be held on two separate days, focusing on cleaning the streets of Merrick Avenue and Merrick Road.

SMCCA Vice President Berta Weinstein announced at their March 1 meeting that the clean sweep will be held on April 2 and May 15 around 10:00 a.m. In addition to the clean up of the roads, the cleaning volunteers will also be responsible for potentially planting flowers at the library. Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads attended the meeting organizing the clean up event.

The association welcomes all available volunteers to contribute time to the clean up. The event will allow young teens to contribute and earn community service hours if needed. Additionally, local girl scount troops will be attending.

The event will be about one to two hours per day, according to SMCCA President, Joe Baker. Police escorts will be present to ensure the safety of volunteers cleaning the streets.

“It was very successful last year,” Baker said at the meeting. “We want to do what’s right for the community.”

At prior clean ups, the route started at Cammanns Pond and made its way toward Merrick Road and Merrick Avenue. As of right now, the route is being finalized for this year’s event.

The SMCCA will be organizing the event in conjunction with the Jewish War Veterans organization.

“I think it’s a good thing,” Baker added of the event. “We want to keep this community clean and attractive.”

The route will go through Merrick Road and Merrick Avenue, but will stretch further if there are enough volunteers to disperse in the area. The SMCCA generally meets once a month on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Merrick Road Golf Course Clubhouse.
