South Merrick civic group spruces up town park

Posted

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, the South Merrick Community Civic Association spruced up the garden around the Town of Hempstead’s signs welcoming folks to Merrick Road Park, at the corner of Merrick and Clubhouse roads.

SMCCA President Joe Baker organized the effort, which was attended by volunteers from the civic group, members of Merrick Brownie Troop No. 2412, and Town of Hempstead Clerk Mark Bonilla and Councilwoman Angie Cullin. Participants pulled out weeds and planted perennials around the town’s signs to create a flower garden.

Soon, though, the rain came, and the effort had to be scaled back. Baker said that civic association volunteers plan to return to the site to finish the job, as well as plant a larger garden at Nassau County’s Cammans Pond Park nearby.
