South Merrick home burglarized; suspect reportedly caught in canal

Posted

A man recently released from prison reportedly burglarized a Clubhouse Road home in south Merrick on Friday night, around 9:30 p.m., leading police on a chase, with helicopters circling overhead for roughly an hour, residents of the normally quiet neighborhood report.

No one was home at the time of the burglary. A home alarm alerted police of the burglary.

Neighbors said that police went door to door, searching for the suspect, who, police told them, was released from a Virginia prison two months ago on burglary charges. Police could not be reached to confirm the report.

The man was reportedly caught by police in a canal off Clubhouse Road.

It was the second time in the past week that a south Merrick home was burglarized. Earlier in the week, a home off Hewlett Avenue was broken into, and neighbors reported that helicopters were seen hovering overhead.
