At Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, it’s easy to forget you’re in suburban south Merrick. While gazing at goats grazing in a pasture beside a tumbledown shed, trails curving out of view up a hillside, rushes hiding a stream, or vistas of bays and the beach, the sounds of passing cars or neighbors’ lawnmowers fall away into silence.
Merrick’s 52-acre hidden treasure is located behind the Town of Hempstead’s Sanitation Department off Merrick Road. It was developed on a converted landfill and offers broad views of the South Shore from the top of “Merrick Mountain,” hiking trails and exercise stations, a fishing pier, kayaking, and a colorful and exotic assortment of creatures like Nigerian dwarf goats and guinea fowl.
