Children dressed as sorceresses, superheroes, princesses, professional athletes, animals and other characters for a day of fun at Temple Israel of South Merrick’s Mel Polay Purim Carnival on March 1.

Purim is a festive Jewish holiday that, according to scripture, commemorates Jews’ escape from annihilation in ancient Persia. Today it is often celebrated with carnival games and costumes for children.

At Temple Israel, there were annual favorites like carnival games, cotton candy and other treats, face-painting and live entertainment. This year’s showstopper was Nick the Balloonatic inflating balloons in fanciful shapes.
