Evelyn Polay, fourth from right, a Temple Israel of South Merrick member, has helped organize Purim festivities at the temple since 1996. The annual carnival is dedicated to her late husband, Mel Polay, who loved Purim and died in 1995. The Temple Israel Men’s Club co-sponsored this year’s event.

Purim is a festive Jewish holiday that, according to scripture, commemorates Jews’ escape from annihilation in ancient Persia. Today it is often celebrated with carnival games and costumes for children.
At Temple Israel, there were annual favorites like carnival games, cotton candy and other treats, face-painting and live entertainment. This year’s showstopper was Nick the Balloonatic inflating balloons in fanciful shapes.
