Walter Mintz, 20-year Merrick Library trustee, dies

Walter Mintz, a longtime Merrick Library trustee who played an instrumental role in development of the new library on Merrick Avenue, has died, library officials are reporting.

A funeral will be held at noon on Thursday, March 22, at Gutterman’s Memorial Chapel in Rockville Centre. The family will sit shiva at home in Merrick from Thursday to Monday and in Chevy Chase, Md., next Tuesday and Wednesday. 



Ellen Firer, the Merrick Library director, offered these words about Mintz: “Walter was a passionate reader and seeker of knowledge. In that pursuit, he was elected to and served on the Merrick Library Board for 20 years, 15 as president. During that time, he led initiatives to expand community programming, to introduce new technology and to construct a state-of-the-art building.”

The family is asking that donations be made to the library’s Walter Mintz Fund, c/o Ellen Firer,
