Oceanside teachers presented a Teach to Lead Leadership Lab on Sept. 10 at Adelphi University. This Leadership Lab is one in a series convened by Teach to Lead, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the National Board, along with 80 supporter organizations.

Jennifer Wolfe and Erin Gilrein are National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) who have guided more than a dozen of their peers in Oceanside through the rigorous process to become NBCTs. Oceanside currently has the highest number of NBCTs on Long Island and there are currently 11 more in the pipieline. Wolfe and Gilrein outlined a process for NBCTs to mentor new teachers, using the Teaching Channel as a resource.

The Teach to Lead initiative focuses on expanding opportunities for teacher leadership in ways that enhance student learning and make it possible for teachers to stay in the classroom while leading in the profession. Their idea, one of 300 proposals submitted nationwide, resulted in winning a Leadership Lab, one of only a handful being conducted around the country.
