Fortnightly Program

Special Concert at St. Agnes Cathedral

Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m. The 100 voices of the St. Agnes Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys and Diocesan Boys Choir or Rockville Center will host the 60-voice Mainz, Germany Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys Concert.

Friendship Fair 2011

Oct. 14-15. The Church of the Ascension, 71 N. Village Ave. presents this admission-free fair every two years, offering a wide range of items old and new including bargain-priced jewelry, collectibles, crafts, antiques, and books. Hours for the Friday and Saturday fair, one of the largest of its kind on Long Island, are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days. Baked goods, jams and jellies will be among the foods available for take-home purchase and lunch, dinner and snack choices will offered for sale at moderate cost. Irish Language Classes at Molloy College

The Irish Studies Institute at Molloy College will offer Irish language classes at its Rockville Centre campus on Saturdays, Oct. 15 through Dec. 10, with intermediate classes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and beginning classes from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The classes will be taught by Jerry Kelly, former adjunct professor of Irish Language and Culture at Fordham University. PBA fundraiser for owners of E&W Deli

The Waxon family suffered a devastating loss this summer when a construction job in their business, E & W /Greystone Delicatessen on North Long Beach Road caused a fire that destroyed it. On Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. the Rockville Centre PBA will host a fundraiser at Kasey's Upstairs, 23 N. Park Ave. The cost for a ticket is $50. There are only 150 tickets available. There will be an open bar and unlimited select finger foods. There will also be raffles and a 50/50 with all proceeds going directly to the Waxons. Tales Tombstones Tell

On Oct. 23 (Oct. 30 raindate) from 1 to 3 p.m., the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook will host a walk in the Rockville Cemetery (once known as the Old Sandhole Cemetery) at 45 Merrick Road in Lynbrook. You’ll have the opportunity to “meet” some of the historic people who helped to build Lynbrook, East Rockaway and Rockville Centre. Watch as our ancestors “come alive” and tell us all what really happened back in the times of old. You’ll get a chance to hear from such people as Captain Charles Winslow, who captained the doomed ship “Mexico”; Wright Pearsall, one of Lynbrook’s famed founders; Irene Davison, a local suffragette; and Mordecai Rock Smith, for whom Rockville Centre was named. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance by calling (516) 887-9094. They can also be purchased at Lyn Gift Shop, 11 Atlantic Ave., Lynbrook. Guests should arrive by 12:45 p.m. No children under 12.

Village Art Club

The Village Art Club is pleased to begin its new season with watercolor artist, Nancy Wernersbach, who will demonstrate how to recycle failed watercolors with collage. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre LIbrary, 221 North Village Ave. It is handicap accessible. Admission is free and open to non-members. Mah Jongg game night

Congregation B'nai Sholom-Beth David, 100 Hempstead Ave., presents mah jongg game nights on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. All level players are welcome. Beginners instruction available. Fall yoga session

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes each, that began on Sept.13, at 7:30 p.m. The series of classes is available for $150 (you save $30) or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Library. The Library’s Career Center is now open Saturdays! Five computers available for your job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Inter-net access and bookmarked job search websites. Display Cases

Jewelry by Ellen Grossman

The display cases at the Rockville Centre Public Library will feature the jewelry designs of Rockville Centre resident Ellen Grossman through October.

When creating her one-of-a-kind pieces, Grossman selects gem stones and beads at shows across the country crafted by the finest artisans in the field. She has been a working artist and jewelry designer for more than 30 years. She has appeared in numerous juried art and jewelry shows, where her designs win awards.

It’s Personal…Photography by Yanina Goldstein

The photographs of Yanina Goldstein will be on display ihrough November. Her photographic themes range from plants and wildlife, to abstract photographs and nudes. The idea of capturing a single moment on film, or photographing subjects which her audience might find shocking, gives the young photographer great pleasure.

Goldstein began studying photography in tenth grade. During college, she broadened her studies from original wet lab black and white photography to digital photography.

Goldstein enjoys retouching vintage photographs, drawing, and reading.

Special Class

The All-4-One yoga class is offered for children with special needs ages 3-to-13 on Saturdays 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. July 9 to 30. Call the Rec office for details.

Tennis Courts open

The Har-Tru courts adjacent to the Rec Center are open and ready for play. Courts are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dusk. Admission is by valid recreation card plus court fees.

Aerobic Exercise Classes

Ongoing aerobic exercise classes by Nancy’s Aerobics are being offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings beginning at 7. Classes may be paid for by the session and are conducted in the Rec Center gym.

Zumba Classes

The Zumba fitness program with Ruth Karhu is offered Thursdays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. with babysitting available for a fee and Saturdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pay as you go.

Birthday Parties

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to village residents from ages 2 to 12. Parties are offered Monday through Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday parties beginning at 10 a.m. or 12, 2 or 4 p.m. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center office or call (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

Part time jobs available

Residents who are at least 16 years old may apply to work part time on weekday and weekend programs, parties and special events. Applications are available at the Rec. Center office.

OCTOBER EVENTS

Fresh Water Fishing Clinic

Oct. 15. The New York State Environmental Conservation and the L.I. State Park Commission will present the annual freshwater fishing clinic at Hempstead Lake Sate Park on that day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be exhibits, contests and prizes. The fee is $6 per person for anyone age 12 and over. Call (516) 766-1029 for further information.

Halloween Mural Painting Contest

Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. - noon. Boys and girls in grades 4-8 must register by Oct. 16 at the Recreation Center for the annual contest. The Halloween artists are invited to paint Halloween themes, on paper that is taped to the interior walls of the Rec. Center. Plaques are awarded by a distinguished panel of judges for the best murals. This contest is rain or shine.

Halloween ghosts and goblins craft activity

Oct. 22 from 12:15-1;45 p.m.

For boys and girls in grades K-5 Creativity abounds with ghoulishly grand autumn crafts to enhance your holiday décor! Fee: $10, register by Oct. 19.

Candlelight Vigil

Oct. 23. Rockville Centre will honor those who were lost on 9/11/01 with a candlelight service at the Village Green on Maple Avenue at 7 p.m.

Sen. Skelos's Golden Gathering

Oct. 28. Senior Citizen information and exposition at the Rec Center from 9 a.m. - noon.

Costume Parade and Party

Oct. 30. Rockville Centre’s 22nd annual Halloween Costume Parade and Party is Sunday, Oct. 30. Youngsters pre-K and up, their parents and families are invited to join the parade which starts from the Village Green, Maple and Lee avenues, at 2 p.m. and proceeds down Maple

Avenue to the Rec. Center.

At the center there will be games, fun prizes for the costumed marchers. Everyone must register for the parade and/or party at the Rec. Center for $8 per family. In case of rain, the parade is cancelled, but the party will begin at 3 p.m. at the Rec. Center.

Goblin calls

Oct. 31. Fill out the Goblin Call Slips at the Halloween Party after the Costume Parade and you may be one of the lucky ones to receive a Goblin Call and Goblin prize on Halloween evening.

Operation Christmas Child

The Rec. Center is collecting school supplies, toiletries and small games for distribution to needy children. Bring your donations, in their original packaging , Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by early November.

Food Donations Needed

The Rec Center is accepting donations of canned and dry goods, as well as frozen turkeys or turkey coupons for distribution to the needy. Bring donations Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before Thanksgiving.

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 29. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m.. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are needed for entry.

10k, 5k and Family Fun Run

Road races, sponsored in conjunction with the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, will take place on village streets on Nov. 12. Register for the races at the Rec. Center.

Senior People in Action celebrate their 10th successful season with a walk on Oct. 4 beginning at 1 p.m. from the Sandel Center to Village Hall where they will be greeted by village officials and fellow Senior Center members. Belmont Race Track

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for July and August.
