Everyone’s stretching at the Friedberg JCC

When you think of working out you likely think about barbells, dumbbells, and treadmills, but how often do you think about stretching? At the JCC in Oceanside, the fitness team is making it their goal to get people to stretch more often.

Personal trainers guide clients through both active and passive stretching routines. Jill Nass is a certified personal trainer and stretch specialist and guides clients such as Long Beach resident Liz Mahon, through exercises targeting various muscle groups and demonstrates the transformative power of stretching from dynamic movements to assisted stretches.

Nass breaks down the science behind stretching, elucidating how disciplined stretching can lead to increased flexibility and improved daily movements. Nass emphasizes how stretching can be a great complement to a strength or cardio workout, but it can also offer many benefits. The key takeaway: stretching is not just a physical exercise but a journey towards enhanced well-being and an active, social life.

“That’s why Liz is in such good shape and she’s still walking on the boardwalks,” said Nass.

Active stretching is done by individuals themselves while passive stretching is done with the assistance of a Personal Trainer. Both types provide good results if done consistently. In recent months, assisted stretching has taken off at the JCC.

“Members love it,” said JCC member, Suzi Tuckman, “Assisted stretching is a gift to myself, providing relaxation and health benefits.”

Nass takes Mahon through various stretching techniques, including rowing movements and tricep extensions. The focus on breath control during stretches and the importance of avoiding pain is emphasized, providing valuable insights for those exploring stretching routines.

Mahon started her trips to the JCC two years ago after moving to Long Beach and although she has always been a regular gym attendee, she says stretching with Nass has made her feel great.

“I’m able to take possible lessons from Jill and it’s really good because as we age, you’ll wake up one morning and ask what hurts next?”
