Girl Scouts from Oceanside attend “World Thinking Day”

A sea of 110 green, blue and brown vests filled Oceanside school number six’s gymnasium the morning of Saturday, Feb. 28. “This is a special day for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world to “think” of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their “sister” Girl Scouts,” said Tammi Allegra, a leader of Cadet Troop 2304 and the orchestrator of this year’s event.

This year’s event revolved around the theme “Food and Fitness around the World.” It focused on three countries: India, Colombia and the United Kingdom. At each station girls tasted a sample native dish to that country and participate in a fitness activity.

Local fitness instructors volunteered their time to participate in the day and teach the girl scouts some new fitness techniques.

Christina Peruffo, from Oceanside’s DOCA yoga program taught Yoga to the young ones when they made it to India. Andrea Morton from Freeport Fitness Solutions shared her Zumba moves over in Colombia and Tom Himmelberg, also from Freeport Fitness Solutions participated in Pilates in the United Kingdom.

Cadet Troops 2304 and 2417 hosted the event for the younger Girl Scouts. At each “country,” the cadets taught the younger girls fun facts about the country. After “visiting” the county, the Cadets would then stamp the passports of each girl and hand out authentic food for that nation.

After each group went to each station, the day was closed with a friendship flame ceremony. Each girl held their stained glass tea light votive holder that they made and lit their battery tea light in it.

The ceremony reminded the girls of the importance of kindness and to embrace their differences. The Cadets lead the ceremony and the younger girls participated by lighting their candles.

“World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, it is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community.
