With an excessive heat warning in effect through the end of the weekend, Hempstead Town has announced the extension of hours at pools and ocean beaches from Friday, August 12th through Sunday, August 14th. With heat indexes forecast to be as high as 110 degrees throughout the weekend, residents will have an extra hour after standard closing time to cool down at many of the town’s pools and beaches.

“The combination of excessive heat and humidity poses all kinds of health risks to many of our residents,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino. “I urge our residents to take advantage of the extra opportunity to cool down with extended hours at our pools and beaches”

“An extra hour at our pools and beaches is really helpful on hot days,” added Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito. “You can give the sun some time to retreat before heading home for the evening,”

Forest City Park Pool - Closing at 8 p.m.

Santino also offered these tips on how to beat the heat and stay safe during the intense heat:

Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.

Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11 AM and 4 PM. Consider performing these tasks in the early morning or evening hours.

When in the sun, wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and head.

Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes.

NEVER leave children or pets in closed vehicles.

Check on elderly family members, friends and neighbors.

When indoors, use an air conditioner or fans to cool rooms if available.

Cool down with repeated cool baths or showers.

Consider going to public pools and air-conditioned stores and malls.

Seniors and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors or relatives at least twice a day during a heat wave.

Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat-related illness.

Find a cooling center.
