It’s the great kayak race, Charlie Brown

Beautiful weather last weekend brought out over 70 paddlers from Island Park, Oceanside, Long Beach and Rockville Centre for Empire Kayak’s 10th Annual Great Pumpkin Kayak Race.

This unique two-mile kayak race features a mid-race beaching of your kayak to grab a pumpkin then resume racing. Paul Furniss, of Levittown, was first overall with a time of 19 minutes and 50 seconds and his daughter, Jules, was the top women’s finisher.

Ryan Evans and Tracy Eiring took first place in the doubles category.

The post-race buffet of pumpkin pies, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cream cheese, pumpkin ale along with other goodies made everyone happy they participated in the event.
