LIRR to renew Atlantic Avenue grade crossing on Long Beach branch

Road closure and traffic detour will be in effect for next two weekends

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Long Island Rail Road announced Wednesday that it will be performing grade crossing renewal work on the Atlantic Avenue railroad grade crossing on the LIRR's Long Beach branch in Oceanside.

According to a news release, the work will take place over two weekends - Oct. 8 and 9 and Oct. 15 and 16 - and will require the closure of the road and a detour route.

The Atlantic Avenue crossing will be closed to highway traffic on those weekends from Friday at 9:00 p.m. through Sunday at 11:59 p.m. During the first weekend the north track will be completed, while the south track will be done on the following weekend.

Work includes replacing the rubber crossing pads with longer lasting and smoother concrete crossing materials, as well as rebuilding the track bed and replacing the wood track ties with longer lasting concrete track ties in the crossing area.

Upon completion of the crossing work, temporary paving material will be placed between the LIRR crossing panels and the roadway.  The LIRR anticipates that with "weather permitting," "the approaches to the crossing will be permanently repaved."

The permanent repaving will not require the complete closure of the crossing since it affects only one single lane of traffic at a time, the MTA said, and roadway traffic will be maintained for both directions.

To accommodate for roadway closures, the following detour routes will be in effect:

Eastbound:

Proceed east on Atlantic Avenue to Ocean Avenue; then north on Ocean Avenue to Pearl Street. Proceed east on Pearl Street to Rockaway Avenue; then south on Rockaway Avenue to Atlantic Avenue to resume eastbound travel on Atlantic Avenue.

Westbound:

Proceed west on Atlantic to Rockaway Avenue; then north on Rockaway Avenue to Pearl Street. Proceed west on Pearl Street to Ocean Avenue; then south on Ocean Avenue to Atlantic Avenue to resume westbound travel on Atlantic Avenue.
