Malverne historian witnesses accident at WTC site

Crane wires snap, steel beam crushes flatbed truck, worker injured

Around 10:05 on Feb. 16, wires of a crane lifting a steel beam off a flatbed truck at the World Trade Center site snapped, causing the beam to fall about 40 stories and crush the truck.

As of press time, an unconfirmed report claimed that a construction worker was injured, but refused medical attention. Number 1 train service was suspended south of Chambers street.

According to Malverne historian Robert Powers, who works in a building across the street from the site, emergency vehicles immediately descended on the area.

"The crane was lifting [the beam] off the flatbed truck and the wires snapped," Powers told the Herald. "Police surrounding the crash. Ambulances hovering. Very loud. ... Fire trucks and police all over."

The accident occurred near the southeast corner of the site.
