After a day of voting, Oceanside residents have elected a new school board trustee — Stuart Kaplan — and approved the district's proposed budget for the 2018-19 school year.
Kaplan, a professor at Nassau Community College, was elected for the open seat on the board of trustees over Charles Lyon, a sales representative for Richner Communications (parent company to Herald Community Newspapers.) He won with 949 votes over Lyon's 577, a 62 percent defeat.
Also, Seth Blau, current board member, was re-elected for another term.
Finally, the $154 million budget received 1,265 votes for and 495 against — roughly 72 percent in favor. Also approved are the creation of a capital reserve fund — 1,278 "Yes" and 460 "No" — and the use of $750,000 for the completion of capital projects — 1,263 voted in favor, while 373 did not.
