The students in Stacey Madden’s class at School No. 4 were thrilled to receive a letter from President Obama after sending their ideas for an updated presidential seal to the White House several months ago. “I drew the Statue of Liberty on my seal because it represents our country,” said Kian Monaghan. “I also drew the American flag because I’m proud to be an American.”

“I chose to draw the flag on my seal because we pledge to it every day and it means something,” said Gabrielle Abela. “I chose the Statue of Liberty because I live in New York and I love to see it. My Great Seal is filled with symbols that represent our country.” Mrs. Madden explained that after a lesson on United States symbols, the students asked if they could send their designs to the White House. In addition to the students’ letter, Mrs. Madden also received one thanking her for her service as a teacher. The letters were accompanied by photos of the president and first family.
