On Dec. 8, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that $785 million will be awarded to various initiatives around the state through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Long Island will be receiving $101.6 million, and a portion of that will be going to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.

South Nassau will receive $21,268 what will be used for health care skills training for 27 hospital workers, one of 66 projects that will be implemented on Long Island.

“We go by the mantra, ‘Good, better, best: the best never rest.’ And to really fulfill that, we have to be in a position where we’re always pursuing advanced training and learning opportunities,” said Damian Becker, a spokesman for South Nassau. “By doing that — which we do, and it’s a hospital-wide commitment — we’re going to be able to continue to raise our standards in the delivery of healthcare services and be in the vanguard of providing the best possible and efficient healthcare to our patients and our communities. Which is what they deserve.”

The funds will be used for three main avenues of training. The first will be to train nurses at South Nassau to become instructors in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). “This will not only improve patient safety at SNCH,” Becker said, “but will also promote the health and safety of the community at large, by expanding the pool of qualified ACLS instructors.”

The second will be training hospital staff in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center in respiratory rehabilitation exercise therapy and pulmonary stress testing.

The final portion of the money will be used to train nurses in the hospital’s outpatient Physical Rehabilitation Center in skin and wound care management.

“Regional collaborations and planning is a roadmap to get New Yorkers back to work,” Cuomo said in a release. “The plans submitted by all ten regions were truly extraordinary. For the first time, we are putting the power of the state government behind the innovation of our people, giving them the tools to rebuild our economy.”
