South shore is battered by heavy rain and big storms

Dangerous storms with very heavy downpours rolled through Nassau County July 25, flooding streets, downing trees and power lines. There were several fires caused by lightning.

The Oceanside Fire Department responded to over a dozen calls, including an auto accident, a house struck by lightning, mutual aid to a house fire in Freeport, and a sign that blew down and struck two people.

Units were under the command of both Chief John J.T. Madden and Kevin Klein. All Oceanside fire companies and both ambulances were called into service, with mutual aid from Island Park and East Rockaway.

Island Park Fire Chief James Sarro said his department was not as busy as Oceanside. He said Island Park answered the mutual aid call for from Oceanside and some minor flooding issues in Island Park.
