Storm blows through Oceanside, Island Park

Heavy winds and rain blew through Oceanside and Island Park Saturday and continued into Sunday, leaving power outages, some fallen trees and flooding in their wake.

Oceanside Fire Department Spokesman Ed Scharfberg said the department responded to close to 160 calls on Saturday. “But as of Sunday morning,” he said, “most power has been restored and it seems that the storm has subsided.” The department responded to calls ranging from downed wires and poles to fallen trees, but luckily, Scharfberg said, no serious injuries were reported.

The Long Island Power Authority estimated that service to some 222,000 customers was knocked out on Saturday. But the company said power had been restored to more than half of those customers by Sunday morning, and crews would remain working throughout the day to restore power to the remaining customers.

To report a power outage or for information updates, customers are asked to call 1-800-490-0075.
