Empire Kayaks in Island Park hosted its 12th annual “Mayday On The Bay Kayak Race” on Saturday, May 1, kicking off this year's kayaking season. Sixty kayakers participated in the event on a sun-filled, 80-degree morning as they paddled around Garrett Marsh in the three-mile race. Participants included Jim Borstock of Oceanside, who competed in his 12th consecutive race this year. James Kowalski of Lynbrook was first overall with a time of 24 minutes, 13 seconds. Deborah Horne of Miller Place was the first woman to cross the finish line, while Jeff Braucher and Kathleen Lieberman of Long Beach were the fastest double-kayakers.
