Water main break causes low pressure in Oceanside

NYAW repairing issue, which also affected East Rockaway, Island Park and Baldwin

Some New York American Water customers in Oceanside lost their water connection, while other surrounding areas experienced low water pressure Thursday because of a main break on Waukena Avenue and 2nd Street.

“New York American Water crews are onsite and pressure is returning to the system," the utility announced on Facebook. "Crews will remain onsite to make the needed repairs.”

The break temporarily affected water pressure in the Oceanside, Island Park, East Rockaway and Baldwin communities.

In an update on its Facebook page at around noon on Thursday, NYAW wrote that the main break on Waukena Avenue had been isolated and pressures were back to normal levels. In a second update, the utility wrote that the main break was isolated between Long Beach and Oceanside roads, and about 30 customers lost their water connection because of the shutdown.

A representative of NYAW told the Herald that the issue was an extensive break to a 16-inch water main. It was estimated that the 30 homes that lost water would not have service restored until about 10 p.m. on Thursday because of the work that needs to be done on the main between valves on Long Beach and Oceanside roads. Homes that experienced low water pressure should already be returned to normal, the representative added. Crews were knocking on doors to inform residents in the 30 homes about the issue, and left notes for those who were not home.
