While Peter Kambitsis opened his first Long Island bakery on Feb. 1, he is far from a novice. His other culinary ventures include Ripe Juice Bar & Grill and Exo Café in Forest Hills, and NY Bakery in Astoria, Queens. Starting at a young age, Kambitsis learned the art of European baking from his godfather, who owned a bakery in Greece. It became a lifelong dream for Kambitsis to follow in his mentor’s footsteps.

SugarBerry Bakery, which is also a café, is a welcome addition to Rockville Centre on numerous levels. Everything is baked on premises - pastries, cakes, Greek desserts, cheesecakes, pies, cupcakes, muffins, cake pops and cookies. It’s all about high quality, fresh ingredients and timeless traditions. Unique hot and cold beverages are another specialty.

“We use imported chocolate from Greece and Italy, and butter only. You can tell the difference of European style by the taste and weight. There are no cutting corners,” said Kambitsis. “And I rotate my bakers to keep my customers guessing.”

Over 300 desserts are offered. In addition to selling cakes by the slice, SugarBerry also wholesales to restaurants. Ready-made cakes fill the colorful dessert gallery for customers, and one can order personalized and specialty cakes with minimal notice.

Hot beverages include a myriad of European coffees and teas served in many variations (Macchiato, Chai Latte, etc.) and hot chocolate. Cold drinks range from lemonade and iced teas, to gelato smoothies, frappes, cold brew coffee, and Nitro Cold Brew, which comes from a keg, has a frothy crown, and a different flavor and texture.

Seating for 40 is well-appointed in a cozy yet roomy space. Right now, they are setting up an outside garden in the back, which will seat 60 to 80 people. “We are planting night flowers. Their delicious aroma comes out in the evening,” said Kambitsis. SugarBerry Bakery is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to midnight – a great option for a morning treat, mid-day snack, or a late night confection.
