Despite his accomplishments, Schenone remains modest — he said that Mayor Francis X. Murray, a friend, informed him of the decision to honor him too late for him to refuse. “He told me three weeks after they made the decision because it was too late for me to back out. We used to be friends, but we’re not anymore,” Schenone laughed.

“It is my great pleasure and privilege to honor one of Rockville Centre’s best friends,” Murray said.

The Golf Classic is the primary fundraiser for the Rockville Centre Community Fund, which has provided almost $1.5 million in emergency assistance since its creation in 1987.
