The Board of Trustees of the Rockville Centre Public Library has announced that Catherine Overton, the current Director of the Baldwin Public Library, will become the new library director in Rockville Centre.

Overton will be replacing Maureen Chiofalo, who announced her retirement in late June. Chiofalo has been the director of the Rockville Centre library since 2006.

“I’m so excited,” Overton said. “Rockville Centre is a wonderful community.”

Chiofalo will be leaving the library in early September, and Overton will begin as director on Monday, Sept. 9.

Overton grew up in East Rockaway and currently lives in Lynbrook. She has worked at the Baldwin library for 16 years, starting as a trainee and working her way up. Six years ago, when a previous director retired, Overton was made Librarian in Charge. A new director was hired in 2009 and Overton became Assistant Director. Two years ago, Overton became director of the Baldwin library.

“I’ve been at Baldwin a long time,” Overton said. “It’s a wonderful community also. And I thought it might be time for a change.”

Chiofalo started her career at the Rockville Centre library in 1986 as a part-time clerk. She worked in the Children’s Room for about nine years, then moved to the Adult Reference desk. When Gretchen Brown became director in 2000, Chiofalo was made the assistant director. And when Brown retired in 2005, Chiofalo was interim director and then director.

Overton said that she wants to continue the work that Chiofalo began.

“I know that the services are already excellent in Rockville Centre,” she said. “So I want to continue offering and providing the community with the services that they’ve come to expect.”
