Village honors many residents

The village of Rockville Centre honored the accomplishments of the young, old and many in between in nine presentations at the April 13 board of trustees meeting.

First were the winners of the “I ♥ RVC!” video contest, in which residents made videos to show what they love about Rockville Centre. The Sandel Senior Center came in first place for its video, “All About The Place (Rockville Centre)” which features seniors — and Mayor Francis X. Murray — dancing around the village to a parody of the pop song “All About That Bass”. The winners all took pictures on the red carpet and Murray presented Senior Center Director Chris O’Leary with an “Oscar.”

Richard DeGregoris, owner of Gregoris Subaru in Valley Stream, presented the village with a $4,890 check for the Rockville Centre Community Fund. As part of its “Share the Love” campaign, Subaru of America donated some money for each car sold in certain months to national and dealer-chosen local charities.

DeGregoris said that the check represented all of the cars sold at his dealership in January and February. “I’m a resident of Rockville Centre,” said DeGregoris. “So my first charity is the Rockville Centre Community Fund.”

The Rockville Centre Fire Department honored three members — Tom Barbieri, Donna Histerich and Mike Woram — for receiving paramedic certification. All members of Floodlight Company No. 1, they each completed a 1,400 hours of training over 13 months at Nassau County Fire Police EMS Academy at Nassau University Medical Center. Histerich was top of the class.

Other presentations honored the St. Agnes Cathedral school basketball team, members of the American Legion, and village comptroller Michael Schussheim.
