A perfect partnership in Rockville Centre

Posted

In conjunction with South Side High School, the Sandel Senior Center has offered a new and innovative program this academic year — homework help for ESL students in 9th through 12th grades who are challenged not only by the new language they must learn, but also by the content they must absorb to be academically successful. This program is particularly beneficial as the volunteer tutors from the center are all retired certified teachers who wish to continue to educate children.

Members of the Sandel Senior Center can register with social worker Rose Genovese for the program that matches them with ESL students at the Rockville Centre Public Library, to study math, science, English and social studies together. The program helps to build relationships and bridge gaps between generations and cultures.

South Side High School Principal Dr. Carol Burris said she wanted to congratulate both the Sandel Center volunteers and South Side’s ESL students for taking the initiative to foster greater academic and social success. She said she hopes this unique partnership will continue for many years to come.
