Adult Comedy Night adds to coffers for Rockville Centre fifth grade overnight trip

The Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Fundraising Committee’s Adult Comedy Night met with success on Sept. 23.

According to one of its organizers, Dana Mauro, the committee raised more than $5,000 with an audience of approximately 130 people, although even more people had bought tickets or donated money. “The feeling from everyone that came was that each comedian was funnier than the last,” Mauro said. “Hopefully, now that the word is out on what a fun night [it was] and everyone realizes what we’re doing with the money, the [fundraising] will

continue.”

The comedy night was designed for those 18 and older and featured fireman and comedian John Larrocchia, along with Carie Karavas, Eric Tartaglione and John Santo.

The Comedy Night was run with the blessing of school administrators by a group of local parents who are working to restore the fifth grade overnight trip, a once-annual rite of spring for every fifth grader in the Rockville Centre school district, that had fallen victim to difficult budget choices in recent years. It raised money for the fifth grade’s overnight excursion to the New York YMCA Greenkill Outdoor Education Center, set for May 29 and 30.

The committee will hold a second fundraiser, a 5K-race set to take place sometime in the spring. Any questions about the event or the Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Fundraising Committee’s activities can be directed to Mauro at libgnik@verizon.net or Tommy Maher at zotter@optonline.net.
