Community Events

Chanukah Party

Dec. 19. The National Council of Jewish Women and the Recreation

Department will co-sponsor the annual Chanukah party at the Rec. Center, from 5-6:30 p.m. Pre-K children through second graders of all faiths are invited to enjoy music and crafts. There will be crafts, face painting, gifts, snacks and Chanukah music. Children are encouraged to donate a small, unwrapped gift.

Menorah Lighting

The Village’s Annual Menorah Lighting is Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. at Temple B’nai Sholom, Lakeview and Hempstead avenues.

Leaf Collections End Dec. 23

Rockville Centre’s curbside leaf collections will end Friday, December 23. Leaves no longer have to be placed in special leaf bags. They may now be collected into ordinary plastics bags and put at the curb on pick-up days for recycling by the Village’s sanitation contractor.

Bagged leaves will be collected from the curbstrip on the following schedule:

Mondays – South of Sunrise Highway

Tuesdays – North of Sunrise Highway and east of Long Beach Road

Wednesdays – North of Sunrise Highway, west of Long Beach Road, east of Hempstead Avenue to DeMott

Thursdays – North of Sunrise Highway and west of Hempstead Avenue

January Tree Pick-ups

The Sanitation Department announces curbside pick up of discarded Christmas trees from January 3 through January 27.

The tree collection schedule is the same as the leaf collection schedule above. Please put trees at the curbside only on the designated day of the week for your neighborhood.

Community Fund Enchanted Winterland

The Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts presents “An All- American Concert” featuring Copeland’s Billy the Kid at the Molloy College Madison Theatre followed by food and festivities on the Molloy Public Square, Sunday, January 29 beginning at 3 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the RVC Community Fund. Call the Mayor’s Office at 678-9264 for ticket information.

NEED HOMEWORK HELP?

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Library. For further details, contact the Children’s Room.

The Library’s Career Center is now open Saturdays! Hours of Operation: Mondays 9 am-noon, Tuesdays 1-5 pm, Saturdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Also available, one-to-one Career Counseling Wednesdays from 6-9 pm by appointment. Contact the Adult Reference Desk for details.

Display Cases

Sheila Blunt

Ms. Blunt is a painter and potter whose work is characterized by sculpture, carving and other surface decoration. She is a regular exhibitor at juried art shows, many with the Alliance of Queens Artists and the National Art League. Her work has been displayed at the Cork Gallery, Lever House and the Federal Hall Museum in Manhattan, and a number of local libraries and galleries. She is an award winning participant in the Long Beach Craft Show.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Ms. Blunt received her Bachelors degree in Art Education from Penn State University and her Masters in Art Education from Pratt Institute. A secondary art teacher for more than 38 years, she has taught and worked in multiple media, predominately water color and acrylics. Retired from teaching she finds that her many years of exploration with her students have enriched the personal style of her own work. She paints in her own studio and her poetry is created at Potter’s Wheel in Kew Gardens, Queens.

Watercolors by Jean Harper

Jean Harper is a resident of Bellmore and a member of the Rockville Center Village Art Club. She began studying painting as a young teenager and majored in art at Skidmore College. Most of her work is in watercolor and includes a wide range of subject matter. She exhibits regularly at local colleges, libraries and other venues.

Operation Christmas Child

The Recreation Department is collecting school supplies and toiletries for needy children. Donations, which must be in their original packaging , may be dropped off at the Rec Center Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For information call (516) 678-9339.

Annual Mitten and Hat Tree

The Rockville Centre Parks and Recreation Department is again requesting residents to share their warm holiday feelings with those less fortunate by donating new hats and mittens of all sizes and colors beginning Dec. 2. The donations will be hung on the Mitten and Hat Tree in the Rec Center lounge.

Lady Cyclone Soccer Coat Drive

During the week of December 19-23, the Lady Cyclone Soccer team will be holding a coat drive for those in need. The coats can be donated at the Rec Center and they will be donated to local charities.

Winter Program Recreation

The winter program season begins the week of Jan. 3,. Flyers are available at the Rec Center.

Birthday Parties and Rentals

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to Village residents for pre-school and elementary age children, seven days a week. All parties include an organized activity followed by refreshments and celebration time in the party room. Call (516) 678-9338 or 9339 for available dates and fee schedules.

Rooms at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center are available for rental to groups and organizations. Equipment rentals are also available. For reservations, visit the Rec Center office or call (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up is open from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are required.

Gift Certificates

RVC Recreation Department gift certificates are available for gift giving.

Center Stage Luncheon and Performance

Dec. 16 at noon. After a delicious luncheon, members of the Center Stage Choral Group will perform a holiday concert.

South Side Middle School Performance

Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. Students from SSMS will showcase their musical talents.

Intergenerational Holiday Party

Dec. 20 at noon. SSHS students bring the holiday spirit with music, intergenerational sharing and delicious desserts.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men.
