Events and activities in Rockville Centre Nov. 3, 2011

Dr. Dan Cillis, a professor in the Business Division at Molloy College and also a Rockville Centre resident, recently published a novel entitled “Statehood of Affairs.” His work of historical fiction examines an alternate early 1900s America in which a conspiracy could have threatened New Mexico and Arizona’s statehoods. “I am not surprised at the military component of Cillis’ novel. His MBA leadership class has teamed with the Global Maritime and Transportation School of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy,” Dr. Ed Weis, Dean of the Division of Business at Molloy, said in a press release. "As a result, Molloy students have had a valuable leadership experience related to teamwork and chain of command under stressful conditions.”

Marilyn Devlin, the volunteer archivist at the Phillips House Museum of the village, has written “A Brief History of Rockville Centre: The Heritage and History of a Village.” The book, filled with old photographs and descriptive prose, details the development of Rockville Centre from its origins in the 18th century. Devlin, a former member of the board of trustees of the Rockville Centre Public Library, has lived in Rockville Centre for 35 years and is an active member of the community. The Phillips House Museum, at 28 Hempstead Ave. will host a book signing on Nov. 6 from 1-4 p.m. for Devlin’s book, which was published by History Press.

Parish celebration This Saturday, Nov. 5, St. Agnes Cathedral and the Rockville Centre community will gather to honor three special religious sisters at the 49th Parish Celebration, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the St. Agnes Cathedral Parish Center. Sr. Helen Byrne, CSJ, Sr. Kathleen Murphy, O.P. and Sr. Gena Travers, O.P., work as pastoral associates, and are real-life unsung heroines. From the first floor of the Ministry Building on the corner of Quealy Place and North Village Avenue, these three humble, dedicated and hardworking women have spent years quietly tending to the spiritual, material,and emotional needs of the community. Holiday Food Drive

Through Dec. 31, the Rockville Centre/Lakeview Economic Opportunity Commission is holding a food drive for the holiday season. Donated items will be received at the EOC's office at 140 N. Centre Ave. Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (516) 764-4500.

Lecture, book signing

On Nov. 3, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Dr. Herbert Ausubel will give a talk and do a book-signing for "Flower of God" which has been compared to "Schindler's List" and "Night" at the Rockville Centre Public Library, 221 North Village Ave.

The Nuremberg Trials – As you never heard them before

On Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Molloy College's Hays Theatre in the Wilbur Arts Center, John Q. Barrett, St. John's University professor of law, will discuss the Nuremberg Trials and U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Robert H. Jackson, 1892-1954, and his service as the chief prosecutor of the principal surviving Nazi leaders during 1945-1949. This new and exciting perspective is co-sponsored by Molloy's departments of Criminal Justice and Theology & Religious Studies. For information, call Marion Lowenthal at (516) 678-5000 x6880.

Walk for platelet disorders

On Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Recreation Center, Stephanie Wettstein, diagnosed with Chronic Refractory ITP, a rare autoimmune blood disorder, is organizing a walk to raise funds for the Platelet Disorder Support Association.
