Flood waters rise near Mill River

Posted

Rockville Centre residents near the Mill River shoreline awoke to very damp conditions this morning after overnight rainfall coupled with high tide led to flooding.

A coastal flood advisory was put in effect until this morning at 11 a.m. and a wind advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. this evening.

“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects,” according to AccuWeather. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”

High tide hit the area surrounding Mill River around 8 a.m. this morning. The additional mix of heavy rain and wind caused water levels to rise this morning. On a positive note, the waters did not appear to impact any adjacent properties or cause any damage.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman held a press conference to address the impact of the winter storm on communities along the South Shore this morning.

“We now have the flooding under control,” Blakeman said. “Our DPW is out, they are cleaning drains, they've pumped out water and our DPW will start preparing for the second storm that will be arriving this afternoon.”

The national weather service has also warned that a strong arctic cold front is expected to follow around 1 p.m. this afternoon, accompanied by heavy showers and possible thunderstorms.

“Temperatures will rapidly drop, as much as 15 to 20 degrees in just a few hours, and will fall below freezing by late this afternoon, and wind chills will be around 10 to 15 above zero by late afternoon into the early evening,” according to AccuWeather. “If venturing outside, be prepared for the rapidly changing conditions, and dress appropriately.”

The rapid change in temperature is expected to cause icy road conditions into the afternoon and evening hours.
