The Mary Ruchalski Foundation, named for a student at St. Agnes Cathedral School who died earlier this year, held its first-ever Mary Cup last Sunday at the Rockville Links.
Ruchalski died in March after a 14-month battle with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer. She was 12. In addition to playing soccer, softball, lacrosse and basketball, she loved the water, and was a talented swimmer.
More than 600 people attended the interclub swim meet in her memory, which also featured a barbecue and an auction. Swimmers of the Rockville Links edged those of the Hempstead Country Club to take home the coveted Mary Cup in the inaugural event.
The foundation is partnering with researchers to help find a cure for rhabdomyosarcoma, of which there are no survivors. To donate, visit themaryruchalskifoundation.org.
