Fresh look for Skelos North

Posted

Skelos Field got a bit of a facelift.

Drivers on Peninsula Boulevard may have noticed that the north field of the sports complex, which is used for soccer and lacrosse, has had all of its artificial turf removed, and brand new turf is being laid down.

The project was a joint effort of the Village of Rockville Centre and Molloy College, which share use of the field. They divided the $425,300 bill evenly.

Unlike natural grass, artificial turf can be used constantly, so more games can be played on the fields. They are used by Molloy’s soccer and lacrosse teams as well as the Rockville Centre Soccer Club and Rockville Centre Lacrosse. The soccer club alone has 18 to 25 teams playing games on the field every week during its season.

Skelos Field North was originally converted to artificial turf 10 years ago. Since then the field has been used hundreds of times, and the turf was beginning to wear. It was pitted in some places, and had holes in others.
